Youtube for Education
What is YouTube?
YouTube is a free video-sharing service. The service was started as an independent website in 2005 and was acquired by Google in 2006. It lets people upload, view and share videos. These videos can be music videos, instructional, advertising or just some personal experience videos. It is not only a fun platform but also a serious platform for businesses and organizations.
Can you use it for education? Yes. You can easily update videos to introduce a topic, explain an online activity, motivate your learners. During this pandemic, it has been one of the most used tools for distance learning and teaching.
There has been some studies done on using Youtube for educational purposes. Ayşegül Nacak, Burak Demir and Başak Bağlama, from North Cyprus carried out one study. They did a survey on Teacher candidates and their attitude towards YouTube. Their findings show that young student educators found Youtube as an appropriate educational tool. There are some advantages and disadvantages of using Youtube for education like any other social media tools. The advantages can be:
- It is free.
- It is accessible from anywhere.
- It reinforces learning.
- It is always there, can be viewed several times.
- It is very engaging, especially for young learners.
- The videos can be downloaded if they don't have copyright issues.
- It can be distraction.
- A lot of adverts come up when viewing, they may not be appropriate for learners.
- Downloading could be a problem with copyright free videos.
- Not every video is reliable, teachers need to double check the information on it.
